I used to be a champion worrier, driving everyone crazy. I didn’t seem to know how to stop myself.
Jesus talked about that.
Picture someone who hates flying. They’re sitting on an airplane… unfortunately, in the seat right next to you. First, you notice your seat mate sits up very straight in the chair, muscles tight and face strained. His eyes roam constantly, searching the cabin, the windows, and the flight attendants for any sign of trouble. It’s as if he thinks his constant vigilance can keep him up in the air. Poor guy!
Then you glance across the aisle. That guy looks like he’s going on vacation. He’s relaxing in the seat, taking short naps, glancing at a magazine, and joking with the flight attendants.
Both guys end up at the same destination. But one is pale, drawn and exhausted. The other is relaxed and ready for a party!
Thing is, their own efforts didn’t really get either one of them there. The key thing wasn’t the skill or experience of the rider, but the skill and experience of the pilot.
It’s easy to be like our first rider, but Jesus said:
“This is why I keep telling you not to worry about anything in life… People of the world who don’t know God pursue these things, but you have a Father caring for you, a Father who knows all your needs…My little flock, don’t be afraid. God is your Father, and your Father’s great joy is to give you His kingdom.” (Luke 12:22-32, The VOICE)
Are you worried about something? Take it to Father. He knows you. He loves you. He is piloting our lives and he knows exactly how to get us where we need to go.
Over and over, the Lord has wowed me with his faithfulness. Especially on the worst days, weeks, months… the times it feels like nothing is working out… those are the times he shows up and shows off, doing things that completely blow my mind. Finally, I hope, I’m beginning to think more like the second guy—even on those days when the airplane hits a little turbulence and bounces around. What changed? I finally noticed something.
Yes, it matters that we have faith. But here’s what matters so much more:
We know the One we are trusting, and he is faithful!
